The Intercontinental Cup was held annually between the winners of the European Cup and the South American champions from 1960 to 2004.
We qualified as European champions in 1979 but declined to play, so our victims in the European Cup that year (Malmo) played Olimpia (from Paraguay) and lost 3-1 on aggregate.

Changes were made the following year though...Toyota took over sponsorship of the tournament and forced all clubs in both the European and South American tournaments to sign that they would play in the subsequent Intercontinental Cup else legal action would be taken. The match would also be held annually at the National Stadium in Tokyo as a one-off game, which is we found ourselves in Feb 1981 playing against Nacional of Uruguay. We lost 0-1 in the final on a ground that always looked like it had no grass and in what would be Larry Lloyd's final game for us.
